Travel London

London, 2018

We’d never been to London before, and British Airways had non-stop flights from Nashville to London, so we decided to see London on our way to France in August. Our travel mates, Wally’s sister Monica and friend Denise, came along for another European adventure. Monica contributed her great photos to go along with mine, so you’ll see a fun mix from us.

Our flat manager recommended we could use to find a location to drop our luggage until check in, and it was quite convenient. We “stashed” our luggage at The Smoking Jacket in South Kensington, and walked a few blocks to our lunch destination, Anglesea Arms, a charming traditional pub.

Anglesea Arms was the perfect first meal in London, with delicious crispy fish and chips and mouthwatering burgers. We loved their traditional homey pub feel, and the bartender and servers were all so friendly.

With drink and food in us, we were fueled up and ready to get to our flat in South Kensington. We picked up our luggage and Ubered to our flat in Redcliffe Square Gardens to check in. We were a bit boogled by all the super expensive cars parked on the streets around the neighborhood! Wow! Our flat had lots of charm with a big, bright living room, and big outdoor balcony. We were close to the Earl’s Court Tube Station, and could walk to the shops and restaurants around South Kensington.

We got moved in and unpacked, and it was off and running to see the sights after an espresso to pep us up.  Harrod’s was first on the list for Monica and Denise, and I was amazed how many people were shopping and buying! We drifted through, admiring all the pretties, but left without a thing (whew!).

Hyde Park was next, and we drifted through, admiring the gardens, birds and others enjoying the park. They have a great outdoor cafe, so we stopped to rest and have an afternoon cocktail. We loved the manicured Kensington Palace gardens!

We were exhausted by this time, but decided to trek on back towards our apartment. We passed the most charming Italian restuarant Da Mario’s, and planned to go back for dinner the next night. After perusing the lines at the numerous pubs around South Kensington, we chose Zetland Arms for dinner, and were seated upstairs in their quiet dining area. We tried several of their specialty dishes, which were quite delicious.

The next morning, we geared up for a day around London, and took an Uber ride to the Tower of London Bridge. We had lunch next to the bridge at a nice outdoor terrace at The Brasserie at The Tower Hotel with a great view. Everything was quite good except the shrimp scampi, which was more of a frozen mini shrimp concoction, but it was pretty. We listened to numerous bagpipe tunes while eating and tracked down the piper after lunch.

After wandering around a bit, we set the Blackfriar’s Pub as our next stop for a pint at the famous establishment. Notice a theme here? Had to check out all those picturesque popular pubs, and make sure their beer is up to snuff!

I loved the Egyptian obelisk and sphinx that sit by the Thames River.

We decided to try out the underground tube to get to Notting Hill and the antique stores. Of course we got on the wrong one, but figured it out and finally made it.

Unfortunately for me (but made Wally happy), the market in Notting Hill had shut down early because of rain coming, and most of the antique stores were closed. We walked around a bit, and had a few more pints at the corner pub while waiting on the girls to finish shopping.

We’re were starving at this point, so caught an Uber to Da Mario’s for Italian dinner. It was sooo good, and we were fortunate to get a table without reservations.

We walked back to our flat (had to work off that dinner!), and worked on getting packed up for our departure to Nice, France the next morning. Bye Bye London! Time for the French Riviera!
