We wanted to return to Daufuskie Island, S.C., located between Savannah and Hilton Head Island, so decided to drive down to Savannah to spend the night before catching the morning ferry to Daufuskie. We arrived in Savannah in the late afternoon and checked into the East Bay Inn, which is located just across the street from the River Street shops. http://www.eastbayinn.com/
We had reserved a petite queen suite and it was quite comfortable and a corner room overlooking the street. Supposedly guests have had ghost encounters in this room, but we enjoyed a peaceful encounter-free evening. The hotel is perfectly located to walk easily around the historic downtown area.
I would definitely go back again for the value, comfort and location. They offer a continental breakfast in the basement and the receptionist and staff were friendly and helpful. They have complimentary wine in the bar in the early evening, and of course we took advantage of that before walking over to the river for a stroll.
It’s fun to watch the boats go by on the Savannah River
This is a shipping port, and it’s amazing to see the cargo ships churning past.
We were getting hungry by this time and we love oysters. After walking the length of the River Street tourist area, we decided on Bernies Oyster House for our oyster fix. http://berniesoysterhouse.com/
This is a no-frills old -fashioned bar and hit the spot. We had great service and the oysters were large and tasty.
After our snack we wandered back to the East Bay Inn to freshen up for the evening. We wandered around the shopping and restaurant district for a while and I spotted a familiar sight – Leopold’s Ice Cream!
Located at 212 E. Broughton Street, Leopold’s has been a Savannah landmark since 1919. http://www.leopoldsicecream.com/
The evening we visited, people were lined up to the door waiting their turn to get their treats.
Wally got the banana split and I couldn’t resist the hot fudge sundae. This was our dinner.
Tired from the long drive and ready to dig into his split.
We wandered around a bit more to walk off our indulgence then turned in for the night. The next morning we were up and out to explore towards Tybee Island. We were catching the mid-day Bloody Point Ferry to Daufuskie Island from the Savannah Bend Marina at Thunderbolt, located just outside of Savannah on the way to Tybee Island. We wanted to eat at the Crab Shack, however, they didn’t open in time for us to eat and catch the ferry. We did enjoy checking out their really cool decorating, gator pool and bird aviary. http://www.thecrabshack.com/
Real little gators next to the pond
Their patio area is really cool – I love the old bushel baskets as outdoor lights
We drove over to the beach at Tybee Island and enjoyed a brisk walk down the beach
Then it was time to catch our ferry to Daufuskie Island… Stay tuned for our week on Daufuskie…
